Scarf sizes explained
What 20 by 70 actually looks like on, why squares come in 36 inches, and how to choose a size for the way you'll wear it.
Every product page lists the measurements in inches and centimeters, and the shape next to the price. This is what those numbers mean on the body, so you can choose by how you'll wear it rather than by guesswork.
Oblong: the long rectangle
| Size | What it does |
|---|---|
| 12 × 60 in | A skinny scarf. Loops once, ties at the neck or waist, knots on a bag. |
| 20 × 70 in | The classic. Once-around with ends to the waist; a loop that sits at the collarbone. If you own one scarf, it's this size. |
| 28 × 72 in | Wider, so it wraps with volume and doubles as a light shawl. |
| 28–30 × 80 in | A wrap. Covers the shoulders fully, wraps twice around the neck, works over a dress in the evening. |
Rule of thumb: 60–65 inches for a neat loop, 70 or more if you like the ends to show under an open coat.
Square
| Size | What it does |
|---|---|
| 20–26 in | A neckerchief or bandana. Folded to a band it ties once at the neck with short ends. |
| 36 in | The all-rounder. Headband, French knot, shoulder drape, bag tie. Folded diagonally it becomes a 50-inch band. |
| 40 in and up | A shawl when opened; folded, it has enough length for anything. |
Infinity
Measured as a loop. A 60-inch circumference loops twice snugly; 70 inches loops twice with slack. Width of 10–14 inches sits like a cowl; 20 inches or more drapes like a hood.
Choosing by how you'll wear it
- At the neck with a collar: 20–26-inch square or a 12-inch oblong.
- Under a coat, ends showing: 20 × 70 oblong or longer.
- Over the shoulders: 36-inch square or a 28 × 80 wrap.
- In the hair: 36-inch square, silk or viscose.
Measurements are approximate by up to an inch; hand-finished edges vary. If you're between sizes, go larger. Big can be folded; small can't be stretched.
